Soul II Soul - Back To Life (HQ)

1989) "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)" is a song by British R&B band Soul II Soul. It appeared on their debut album Club Classics Vol. I, (Keep On Movin' in the U.S.) and was released as its second single. "Back to Life" was one of two songs on the album featuring British R&B singer Caron Wheeler and gained success in both the UK and in the U.S. The album version of the song was an a cappella which was remixed and re-recorded before being released as a single. Two new versions were produced â€" the first taking the original recording with instrumentation added, and the second was a re-working of the song with new lyrics and chorus (also adding "However Do You Want Me" to the title). It was this second version that became most popular. "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)" peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of Soul II Soul's most successful singles in the U.S. (and the only one to enter in the top 10). In the UK it performed even better, reaching number one in the UK Singles Chart for four weeks in June 1989. For a time, the album was packaged together with a CD3 single including the new versions of the song. The song was later sampled by rapper Tragedy Khadafi, then known as the Intelligent Hoodlum, on his song "Back to Reality". The song appeared on his debut album, Intelligent Hoodlum. The song was also featured in the opening scene of Hype Williams' motion picture Belly. The song featured in "The Fresh Prince Project", the pilot episode of The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The main character, Will Smith sings the song while waiting on the door step and dances to it in his bedroom later in the episode. The song was also sampled by rapper Maino. The song name is called However Do You Want It and is produced by J. R. Rotem. _____________________________________ Soul II Soul is a 2-time Grammy winning act that emerged at the end of the 1980s from London. The group initially attracted attention as a sound system, playing records at house and street parties (where their clothing style - dubbed "Funki Dred" - quickly made a splash, inspiring them to start a line of clothing). Founded by Jazzie B and featuring a changing roster of other musicians - notably Nellee Hooper, Simon Law, Phillip 'Daddae' Harvey and Caron Wheeler - Soul II Soul's experiments in music-making of their own resulted in the dub plate "Fairplay," which secured them a deal with Virgin Records. They had huge hits in 1989 with the singles "Keep on Movin'" and "Back to Life (However Do You Want Me)," both from their debut album Club Classics Vol. I. These songs (both featuring Wheeler on vocals) set the tone for early 90s mainstream dance music in the UK. Their follow-up album, Vol. II: 1990 - A New Decade, yielded the hits "Get A Life" and "A Dream's A Dream," the latter featuring operatic vocals by Victoria Wilson-James. While their U.S. following declined somewhat following its release, Soul II Soul continued to have hits in the UK, including 1992's #4 single, "Joy." Soul II Soul reached Volume 5 of their series for Virgin in 1995, then released 2 more albums for Island Records. In October 2004 "Keep on Movin" appeared in popular videogame Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas, playing on R&B, Soul radio station CSR 103.9. The Soul II Soul Sound System featuring Caron Wheeler will be touring Australia nationally in February 2009. They are also playing the Playground Weekender Festival near Sydney, New South Wales. The group are currently finishing up recording sessions for their 7th album to be released in 2009. On 2nd December 2008 a programme on Soul II Soul appeared on bbc Radio 4, at 1.30PM GMT. The daughter of former member Melissa Bell was the winner of the 2008, fifth season of the UK television talent competition/show The X Factor
