Legendary as one of the three rock greats to die in the tragic 1959 Clear Lake, IA, plane crash that also claimed the lives of Buddy Holly and Ritchie Valens, the Big Bopper (born Jiles Perry Richardson) had just established himself as a rock hitmaker with the rollicking "Chantilly Lace." Cross Knee Release Improvements: No Sub-hand Support. Knee Lock Idea from Redke71, ExDiva69

I saw Shelly's tutorial pop into the in-box this morning before work. I didn't have time to watch it then--but I got to work on her suggestions as soon as I got home Friday night. Karol had also suggested pulling the knee lock tighter by grabbing the foot of the crossed knee to tighten the lock against the pole. Shelly demonstrated the move in her tutorial. On my first cross knee release video, I was holding onto the pole behind my back for support when lowering into the move. On this video, I do manage to let go without ever touching the pole--an ab back into the pole sit. My goal was to do a LEFT/RIGHT combo--do the move on each side of the body, with an ab-up in between , then ab-up to a sit, then dismount. I think I could probably try the move a little higher. Problem is, the pole is so short and I slde down so much that by the time I start the move, I'm only two feet off the ground! So even though I think I could hang down further and straighter, I've got to manage to stay high up on the pole when starting the move. MUSIC CREDIT: J. Milk is a powerful fable about human rights, self-invention, and a movement's proud vitality. Critical acclaim, box-office success, and awards underscore the film's relevance. Still, the movie sidelined many prominent activists for gay rights in the 1970s, including lesbians and people of color, who stood with gay hero Harvey Milk. "Milk Skimmed" will explore alternative stories. It will also speculate on what Milk tells us about queer representation in popular culture today. Featured panelists include: Dr. TomÃ¡s Almaguer, Ethnic Studies Professor and former Dean of the College of Ethnic Studies at San Francisco State University, has authored Racial Fault Lines: The Historical Origins of White Supremacy in California (UC Press, 1994) and the widely-reprinted article "Chicano Men: A Cartography of Homosexual Identity and Behavior." Gwenn Craig was one of the co-chairs for No on 6, a key organization working with Harvey Milk for the 1978 defeat of the "Briggs Initiative" to strip educators of their civil rights on the basis of sexual orientation. For the past 30 years, she has continued to fight for the rights of queer people, women, labor, and people of color. Dr. Joshua Gamson, Sociology Professor at University of San Francisco, authored Freaks Talk Back: Tabloid Talk Shows and Sexual Nonconformity (Chicago, 1998) and The Fabulous Sylvester: The Legend, The Music, The Seventies in San Francisco (Holt, 2005).â€¨â€¨ Ruth Mahaney, White Night Riots veteran, is a pioneer in the teaching of Women's Studies, first in 1972 at Santa Rosa Junior College, and later as Women's Studies Coordinator at Sonoma State University. Andrews Sisters - Oooooo Oh Boom

The preeminent sister act of all time with well over 75 million records under their collective belt, the swinging band era could not be better represented than by Laverne, Maxene and Patty Andrews, or the fabulous "The Andrew Sisters", as they are better known. With their precise harmonies and herky-jerky dance moves, the girls' success never relied on witty banter; they let their hep-styled lyrics and energetic choreography do the talking. In turn, they delivered an upbeat war campaign that instilled hope, joy and allegiance through song and movement. They provided a musical security blanket to a war-torn country via radio, clubs, canteens, recordings and films that reemphasized the motto that America was strong and proud...and to keep on singing and swinging! Second only to perhaps Bob Hope in commitment and extensive USO touring, the girls' profound influence extends even today with such current pop idols Bette Midler, The Pointer Sisters, Barry Manilow, The Manhattan Transfer and even Christina Aguilera all having reinvented themselves in Andrews Sisters style at one time or another. Unfortunately, while the exact harmonies of the girls were thisclose, their interrelationships were much more discordant. Hailing from Minnesota, eldest sister LaVerne was born on July 6, 1911, followed by Maxene on January 3, 1916, and finally Patty on February 16, 1918. Greek father Peter was a restaurateur in the Minneapolis area; their mother Ollie was a Norwegian homemaker. Childhood was pretty much lost to them. The trio's musical talents were quickly identified and they started performing on the road as youngsters, entering assorted kiddie contests and often winning for their efforts. The girls grew up on the vaudeville circuit, roughing it and toughing it with various bands and orchestras. Signed by orchestra leader Louis Belasco in 1937, the girls made their very first recordings with "There's a Lull in My Life," "Wake Up and Live" and "Turn Off the Moon." Subsequent radio work eventually led to the Decca Records label. The surprise of it all is that the girls did not read music! They learned by sense memory, pure instinct and a strong ear. Blonde Patty was the lively melodic leader, engulfed by the warm harmonies of auburn-haired contralto LaVerne and brunette soprano Maxene. The old Yiddish song "Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen" was translated into English for them by Sammy Kahn and the girls walked off with their first huge hit in late 1937 (they were paid a flat fifty dollars and no royalties!). An overnight sensation upon release (it sold over a million copies), their contract was immediately revised by Decca and throughout the rest of the decade, recorded smash after smash -- "The Bear Barrel Polka," "Well, All Right" and "Hold Tight, Hold Tight" among the many. The country was absolutely captivated. Universal responded in like by signing them to some of their nonsensical "B" musicals derived purely for escapism as the U.S. prepared itself for war. Their first appearance actually headlined the zany Ritz Brothers in a corny piffle called Argentine Nights (1940). The frizzy-bobbed trio were introduced as more or less a specialty act with the songs "Hit the Road," "Oh, He Loves Me" and "Rhumboogie" speaking volumes of their talent. Decca went on to record the tunes. This was followed by a 1-2-3 punch back at the recording studio with their renditions of "Beat Me, Daddy, Eight to the Bar," "I'll Be with You in Apple Blossom Time" and "Mean to Me." I worked about 13 hours a day from the afternoon until the next morning. Like, peeling bananas the entire night. 1: Why? Histugi: There is this dessert that uses bananas. 1: How did you use bananas? Histugi: It was a banana with a cream filling. 1: Then you would peel bananas for this? Hitsugi: Yea, probably more than 1000. 2: wow! Thats impressive! 1: Yes! 2: And how do you feel about bananas after you peeled 1000 of them? I couldnt imagine. Histugi: Well, before I could normally eat a banana plain but now I cant. And also, at the factory there was a machine that mixed the cream (does the hand gesture). Like this and I would watch it for 13 hours. 1: Wait, why? Histugi: Sometimes the cream clumps and the machine mixer gets stuck (does hand motion) so you have to watch it. When it does get stuck, you stop the machine and scrape the cream and then start it again. 2: Oh I see! 1: What about the other members? What did you do? Yomi: I worked in a pizza parlor. 1: Ahh, pizzaand what about you? Sakito: UmmIm not sure Im allowed to talk about it here. 1: Why not? Perhaps you used dark sunglasses in your job. Skaito: What? Albert Hammond (born 18 May 1944, London, England[1]) is a singer-songwriter, whose family came originally from Gibraltar.[2] Hammond is one of the more successful pop/rock songwriters to come out of England during the 1960s and 1970s, and has also enjoyed a long career as a recording artist, his work popular in two languages on three continents across four decades. Hammond was born in London, due to a war-time shift in family circumstances; the family returned to Gibraltar just months after his birth.[1] In 1960 he started in music with Gibraltarian band 'The Diamond Boys', of no real commercial success, but which played a part in Spain's introduction to popular music. Greensleeves - Anonymous - Lute Work

Greensleeves, one of the most popular tunes in history, was already a favorite in Elizabethan times.It was twice mentioned in Shakespeare's Merry Wives of Windsor, and first appeared in the stationer's register of 1580 when Richard Jones had licensed to him "A new Northern Dittye of the Lady Greene Sleeves." There is, however, evidence that the tune is of much earlier origin, perharps in Henry VIII's time, this registration and the many that followed it being evidence of a new wave of popularity in the late sixteenth-century. In the following century it was adopted during the revolution by the cavaliers, who wrote many political songs to this tune, and in 1728 appeared again as one of the melodies selected for the Beggar's Opera. I am playing the William Ballet's lute book's version.

Duality of MTV 0001

Postmodernisms critiques of MTV focuses on the disruptive and segmented nature of the visually edited and energetic MTV, as theorized by Andrew Goodwin in Dancing in the Distraction Factory. Within this medium, a duality exists in both creating cultural hegemony, perpetrated by corporate dictatorship, alongside a forum for cultural pastiche and expressions of cultural rebellion and independence. That which is outside of the consensual mainstream created by the efforts of hierarchical systems put in place by dominant groups of society is the critical expression, all other forms of communication are part and parcel of the, what Dr. Strangelove calls the empire of mind, or persuasive social control exerted through communication efforts of large, powerful and symbolically capitalistic organizations. In the case of mtv, the organization found its roots in the corporate strategy of advertising and promotion, serving as a tool for corporate agendas and music publishing companies to promote their artists. This usage can be explained with the use/exchange value system established by Marx. In relation to MTV, the videos began to serve the purpose of exchange values and usable commodities for capitalistic gain.

The Poni-Tails - Who, When And Why

The trio of Toni Cistone (lead vocals), LaVerne Novak (high harmony), and Karen Topinka (low harmony) were students at Brush High School in Lynhurst, Ohio near Cleveland, when they started singing together in 1956. They performed at school functions and benefits, and it was at one of these shows that they were spotted by an attorney, John Jewitt, who gave them an introduction to music publisher Tom Illius. Illius liked the soft style of the trio and their original song "Que La Bozena." Illius took them to the local Point Records, who issued their first single "Your Wild Heart" in January, 1957. Unfortunately, even innocence white girls were subjected to being covered. "Your Wild Heart" became a hit for Mercury artist Joy lane (#20) while the Version by the Poni-Tails, named for the hairstyle they wore at the time, became an instant collectible. With Illius managing the group hey had one more single with Marc Records "Can I Be Sure". Tony and LaVerne auditioned for a replacement for Karen when her father made her leave the group. They came up with former Regina High student Patti McCabe. Illius got ABC Records' Don Costa , later to produce/arrange for Paul Anka, Frankie Avalon, Dean Martin, Frank Sinatra and found DCP Records; interested in the group. ABC released "It's Just My Luck To Be 15" by the end of 1957. It quickly disappeared. With a similar theme "Born To Late" made the Poni-Tails part of rock and roll history. It reached number seven on Billboard's Top 100 and number five in England. The group might have remained anonymous if ABC had had its way as they were promoting the other side "Come On Joey, Dance With Me". It was only after several Cleveland deejays pushed "Born To Late," the other side, that the record took off. The model of what parents of the 50s considered to be "the safe look" appearances on Dick Clark's American Bandstand by the Poni-Tails further fostered that image. For the next two years the Poni-Tails attempted to recapture the magic of "Born To Late". Despite its suggestive title "Seven Minutes To Heaven," their next single, only reached number 87 in December, 1958. Their last record to chart was "I'll Be Seeing You," a rockaballad that went down well at record hops as a "ladies choice" number, in late fall of 1959. "Who, When, and Why" was their last record in 1960. ABC still wanted to renew their contract for another five years in 1960, but the Poni-Tails decided to call it a career and settle into family life. The Poni-Tails - Born Too Late

Toni Cistone (lead), LaVerne Novak, and Karen Topinka were the original Poni-Tails. Unlike some other acts who scored big in rock, the trio of ladies didn't come from meager beginnings; they all were from Lyndhurst, OH (an upper-middle-class suburb of Cleveland where they expected children to graduate from high school, go to college, earn a degree, and become a professional; involvement in popular music was considered frivolous). The trio began singing at Brush High School; attorney John Jewitt introduced them to music publisher Tom Illius who got the ball rolling. Illius liked a self-penned song the high schoolers wrote, "Que la Bozena," and offered to shop it around town. A deal was secured with a local label, Point Records, with Illius acting as their manager. Point released "Your Wild Heart" with the Poni-Tails tune as the B-side. They almost charted with their first release, but Joy Layne, a Chicago singer, covered the song on Mercury Records. Layne's version zoomed to number 20 on Billboard's pop charts; her version deserved to hit, she had range and vocal dynamics that the Poni-Tails didn't possess, and she was only 15 years old. Layne was a Sandy Duncan look- and soundalike. Tom Illius secured a deal for the Poni-Tails with Marc Records; one release resulted, "Can I Be Sure," which didn't do as well as their debut recording. Around this time, Karen Topinka's father had enough of the music business, its promises, the broken dreams, and elusive royalties, and persuaded Topinka to quit. the Poni-Tails held auditions and chose Patti McCabe, a Regina High School student, as Karen Topinka's replacement. Through Illius, a deal got consummated with ABC-Paramount and the revamped Poni-Tails waxed "Just My Luck to Be Fifteen," which vanished from sight upon release. Then came their claim to fame, a record that many radio stations still play today -- "Born Too Late." It was the flip side of "Come on Joey, Dance With Me," but some Cleveland DJs (Bill Randall being the most prominent) thought otherwise and played "Born Too Late," and the gamble paid off. Subsequent ABC-Paramount recordings, "Seven Minutes to Heaven" and "I'll Be Seeing You," stiffed at numbers 85 and 89, respectively. the Poni-Tails' final recording, "Who, When, and Why," came out in 1960 and failed to chart. ABC-Paramount was not dismayed, they wanted to sign the group for five years more, but their interest in the music business waned. The business is not for everybody, and certainly not for suburbanites with other options at their disposal. For their recording efforts, all the Poni-Tails ever received was fan mail and spending money. The lack of royalties, which undoubtablely was devored by the cost of the recording sessions, outfits, traveling expenses, and promotional costs, probably related to their decision to exit. Patti (McCabe) Barnes died of cancer in January 1989. Toni (Cistone) Costabile worked at a high school in Shaker Heights, OH, and Laverne (Novak) Glivic works as a real estate agent in Mentor, OH, and lives by Cleveland Hopkins Airport. "The three years were fun, but I just wanted to get out of the record business and get back to normal living," stated Toni Cistone. The girls did, however, regroup to sing their hit at the -Moon Dog Coronation Ball held in Cleveland, OH, in 1997, with Herb Reed the Platters, the Skyliners, the Drifters, and others. Poni Records has compiled a bogus 12 song CD of Poni-Tail recordings entitled Fun Fun Fun. The only Poni-Tail tune listed is "Born Too Late." The rest, like "Ooh Baby, Baby," "You Don't Own Me," "Tell Him," and "Da Do Ron Ron," couldn't have been recorded by the original Poni-Tails, since they retired in 1960 and many of these songs first appeared years later. Balinese Gamelan / Irama plays Baleganjur music in 1994 Part 1

This is a part 1 performance of Gamelan Ensemble Irama, a group from Amsterdam that I played in in the nineties. It's a performance in the Tropenmuseum in Amsterdam, Autumn 1994. At the time Irama played in several formations several forms of Balinese gamelan. Also playing in this video are the two founders of Irama, Henrice Vonck (in red, on ceng-ceng) and Sinta Wullur (on reyong) and at the time I was also a member of the ensemble. Here we play the 'marching band'-like procession music of Bali, which is called 'baleganjur'. In its traditional form it's played with cymbals and big and small gongs at processions during important occassions. In the eighties baleganjur suddenly became more popular and in particular youngsters began to experiment with the musical format and the instruments and soon all over Bali many baleganjur competitions were organised where groups presented thier latest compositions. As far as I know baleganjur is still very popular in this contest context. In this video Irama plays a competition piece from the village of Krambitan, North-West Bali, written by a few nineteen year old boys. Irama-drummer and orchestra leader Henri Nagelberg learned the piece while doing research on Bali in the early nineties. Baleganjur is great energetic music, with great interlocking repetitive patterns and for the melody in fact only the four notes of the reyong are used. This is the well that many western minimal composers drunk from to get inspired. I will always love this music. I'm hardly visible in this video, but you can surely hear me all the time, with my (invisible) right hand I produce the constant metronome sound on the kajar and with my left hand I play half the kajar-tempo on the kempli. Evrything is organised along 8 beat gong frases. All instrument groups -2 drums, 2 players on reyong, 5 players of ceng-ceng cymbals- play interlocking patterns. The organising principles of baleganjur (and other Balinese gamelan music) offer endless possibilities to wave together beautiful patterns and compositions. The footage I use here comes from an old vhs-video, that contained two video-recordings of our performance. The picture quality -from 15 years ago- is quite bad, but I think the music is interesting enough to present on Youtube. I've combined the two available video-recordings, alternating from one to the other wherever it was possible and/or musically interesting. Not so easy, cause the original footage wasn't 'score'-directed, the two filmers at the time (among them my brother) didn't know the piece and filmed on an intuitive basis. Still, in combining their footage I've tried to make the best of their shots. This video shows part 1 of the performance. Elsewhere on my channel you'll find part 2. Hope you'll like it!

David Guetta (born 7 November 1967 in Paris) is a French DJ. He began mixing his first vinyls at home at the age of 13, and organised parties in his basement at 15. Two years later, he was working as a DJ in a club called 'Broad', based in Paris. This was effectively where he launched his career. From 1988 to 1990, he mixed house music at Radio Nova. In 2005, his single "The World Is Mine", which contains a sample of Simple Minds "Someone Somewhere In Summertime", topped European dance charts. The vocals for most of his singles are performed by singer Chris Willis, except on "Baby When The Light" where they were done by Cozi Costi. He is also known for his appearance in an advertisement for L'OrÃ©al hair cream. In 2008, he was elected as World DJ No. 5 and best house DJ by the British DJ Mag. He has also been playing in many countries around the world to promote his 2007 album Pop Life. He played in Mauritius on the 12th of January 2008 accompanied by French rapper JoeyStarr of the French rap group NTM. In the same year, he and his wife Cathy also planned a new event which took place in the Stade de France on 5 July 2008. He performed with Tiesto, Carl Cox, Joachim Garraud and Martin Solveig in front of 40,000 spectators. The Sensation White, where Guetta performed several times, seems to be the inspiration.

Pat Boone - April Love

In the years immediately prior to the British Invasion, only one performer rivaled the chart dominance of Elvis Presley, and that was Pat Boone. With his trademark white buck shoes, perfectly combed hair and gleaming smile, Boone was the very essence of wholesome American values, and at a time when the rise of rock & roll was viewed as a sign of the apocalypse, he made the music appear safe and non-threatening, earning some 38 Top 40 hits in the process. It's fitting that his achievements rank closest to those of Presley; after all, both claimed the sound of the black R&B culture for their own, in the process straddling both sides of the color line and popularizing a form of music which otherwise might never have gained widespread acceptance. Of course, while Elvis -- with his flashy suits, swiveling hips and suggestive leer -- remained persona non grata throughout many corners of mainstream America, Boone was embraced by teens and parents alike; his music polished rock's rough edges away, making songs like "Tutti Frutti" and "Ain't That a Shame" palatable to white audiences raised on the soothing pop traditions of a vanishing era. Charles Eugene Patrick Boone was born June 1, 1934 in Jacksonville, Florida; a descendant of American frontier hero Daniel Boone; he attended high school in Nashville, and was voted student body president. After graduating, Boone married Shirley Foley, the daughter of country star Red Foley, and after a period at Nashville's David Lipscomb College, he transferred to North Texas State University. There, after taking top honors at a local talent show, he earned the right to appear on the The Ted Mack Amateur Hour, leading to a year-long tenure on The Arthur Godfrey Show. In 1954, Boone made his first recordings for the small Republic label, followed a year later by his Dot Records debut "Two Hearts, Two Kisses." As 1955 drew to a close, he notched his first number one hit, a sedate rendition of Fats Domino's aforementioned "Ain't That a Shame"; in the years to come he would record numerous cover versions of songs first credited to black performers, among them Little Richard, the El Dorados, the Flamingos and Ivory Joe Hunter -- indeed, to the chagrin of purists, for many listeners Boone's records remain better-known than the original performances. Between 1956 and 1963, Boone made some 54 chart appearances, many of them with two-sided hits; his biggest smashes included the number one records "Don't Forbid Me," "Love Letters in the Sand" and "April Love," all three issued in 1957. That year he also began hosting his own ABC television series, The Pat Boone-Chevy Showroom; he also conquered film, starring in 15 features including 1957's Bernadine and April Love. Although his TV program ceased production in 1960, Boone remained a major star as the new decade dawned, and in 1961 again topped the charts with "Moody River." He even became an author, writing a series of self-help books for adolescents including -Twixt Twelve and Twenty, -Between You, Me and the Gatepost and -The Care and Feeding of Parents. Although the rise of Beatlemania put the brakes on Boone's run as a teen idol -- after 1962, he failed to again crack the Top 40 -- he continued recording for Dot through the late 1960s, and in his live performances regularly appeared with his wife and their four daughters, further reinforcing his family-friendly image. By the 1970s, Boone had shifted almost exclusively to recording gospel material, although he later scored a handful of country hits (on, of all places, Motown); in 1977, his daughter Debby topped the charts with a smash of her own, the wedding perennial "You Light Up My Life." In 1981, Boone published -Pray to Win, and in 1983 he began hosting a long-lived contemporary Christian syndicated radio show, all in addition to his extensive charity work. While his recording career continued to taper off, he did issue "Let Me Live," which became an anthem for the anti-choice movement. Paul Anka - Put Your Head On My Shoulder

One of the biggest teen idols of the late '50s, Paul Anka moved to the adult sphere several years later and became a successful performer, songwriter, music businessman, and recording artist, remaining so well into the new millennium. Born in Ottawa, Ontario, in 1941 to parents of Lebanese Christian descent who owned a local restaurant, Anka proved a child prodigy, beginning his show business life at the age of 12 as an impressionist. By the age of 14, he was stealing the family car to drive to amateur singing contests in nearby Hull, Quebec, and writing his own songs. His first single, "I Confess," appeared on the Riviera subsidiary of Jules and Joe Bihari's RPM label. While on a trip to New York with a group of friends who sang as the Rover Boys, Anka gained an audition with ABC producer Don Costa, and sang his own composition, "Diana," an ode to a former babysitter. Costa liked what he heard, recorded the teenager, and watched as the single hit number one on both sides of the Atlantic later in 1957, eventually selling a reported ten million copies worldwide. Anka placed four songs in the Top 20 a year later, including "You Are My Destiny" and "Crazy Love," tempering the all-out rebellion of rock & roll with songs that questioned parental authority rather than promoting outright disobedience. He wrote one of Buddy Holly's last hits, "It Doesn't Matter Anymore," and moved into movies with Let's Rock and Girls Town. The latter film spawned his biggest American hit, "Lonely Boy," just the first in a string of 1959 chart successes including "Put Your Head on My Shoulder," "It's Time to Cry," and "Puppy Love" (written for old flame Annette Funicello, and later a hit for Donny Osmond as well). By 1961, when the teen idol craze began to cool off, Anka (a millionaire while still a minor) could boast of the over 125 compositions under his belt, his own record label (Spanka), and the recognition of being behind the second-best-selling single of all time (only "White Christmas" had sold more copies than "Diana"). Instead of resting on his laurels, Anka took on the adult market. First, he groomed a solo act and got bookings into that haven for sophisticates, the Copacabana. Anka next moved to RCA and, in yet another shrewd business move, bought the rights to his old masters and made a fortune on reissues alone. He diversified his career by appearing in several more movie roles (including the 1962 drama The Longest Day, for which he provided the title song). One of the first pop singers to do shows in Las Vegas, he also hosted television variety shows like Hullabaloo, The Midnight Special, and Spotlite, and moved on to foreign audiences in Asia and Europe (where he found his wife, Parisian model Anne de Zogheb). He wrote the theme to The Tonight Show (aired every weeknight for almost 30 years), rewrote the French lyrics to the song "Comme d'Habitude" for one of Frank Sinatra's most famous later songs, "My Way," and also wrote Tom Jones' biggest hit, "She's a Lady." Anka also branched out in the recording studio, recording theme albums such as Excitement on Park Avenue and Strictly Nashville. Although he had hit the Top 40 only once since 1963, Anka stormed the number one slot in 1974 with "(You're) Having My Baby," a duet recorded in Muscle Shoals, AL, with his singing protÃ©gÃ©e, Odia Coates. The duo's next two singles, "One Man Woman/One Woman Man" and "I Don't Like to Sleep Alone," both hit the Top Ten (his 1974 LP Anka reached gold), and his 1975 solo single "Times of Your Life" reached number seven. Anka charted into the early '80s, continuing his many casino and international appearances while recording sparingly but continually. As such, concert recordings and compilations constituted the bulk of his '80s and '90s discography, although he entered the studio also, most notably on the 2005 Verve date Rock Swings, a collection of contemporary standards. Its large success prompted a follow-up (of sorts), Classic Songs: My Way, from 2007, which included more contemporary standards as well as duets with Michael BublÃ© and Jon Bon Jovi. ~ John Bush, All Music Guide

Teen Queens 1956 Eddie My Love

This R&B duo of Betty (1939, USA, d. 1971) and Rosie Collins (b. 1941, USA, d. 1968) came from Los Angeles, California, USA. Their entry into the recording business and signing to RPM Records in 1955 was facilitated by their older brother, Aaron Collins of the Jacks/Cadets, who recorded for the same company. The youthful amateurishness of the singing on their one hit, "Eddie My Love' (number 2 R&B and number 14 pop), probably helped to make the record a hit in 1956. It was one of the first records specifically to direct its appeal to teenagers. It was the era of the cover record, and both the Fontane Sisters and the Chordettes also took the song high on the pop charts, but it is the Teen Queens" version that endures. The duo could not follow up with a hit, and the second single "So All Alone"/"Baby Mine" flopped miserably. Despite recording some excellent material over the years including "Two Loves And Two Lives" and "Dear Tommy" they had no further chart action. Moves to RCA Records in 1958, Antler in 1960 and Crown Records did not help, and the duo broke up in 1961. The final tragic ending was when Rosie took her own life in 1968, and Betty died in 1971 after falling a victim to drugs. Elton John - I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues (live)

A former student of the Royal Academy of Music in London, England, the man born Reginald Kenneth Dwight in 1947 left school and immediately began his path in the music industry. His first band, Bluesology, was formed in 1961. He would later take his stage name from the Bluesology saxophonist Elton Dean and their charismatic frontman, Long John Baldry. Elton John was introduced to Bernie Taupin in 1967 by Ray Williams at Liberty Records. Amazingly, their first compositions were conducted by mail. In 1968 they became staff songwriters for Dick James' DJM label, farming out music to budding pop stars. Elton and Bernie's prolific nature was established early in his career. By the time Elton's self-titled breakthrough album and evergreen hit Your Song had introduced him to an international stage in 1970, they had honed their skill to such a degree that Bernie could turn out a lyric in half an hour and Elton could compose to it within the hour. In the period between 1970-76, with producer Gus Dudgeon at the helm, they made an astonishing fourteen albums including Elton John, Tumbleweed Connection, Madman Across The Water, Honky Chateau, Don't Shoot Me, I'm Only The Piano Player, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, Caribou and Captain Fantastic And The Brown Dirt Cowboy. Amongst these, Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy was the first album ever to enter the Billboard Chart at Number One. Goodbye Yellow Brick Road, with its string of American Number One hit singles and unbroken two month run at the top of the Billboard Top 100, became an all- time classic. In 1974 Elton performed on John Lennon's comeback single Whatever Gets You Through The Night, and later that year was joined by Lennon onstage at New York's Madison Square Garden. This performance, always cited by Elton as one of the most memorable of his entire career, was to be John Lennon's final concert. In the late 1970s Elton's partnership with Bernie Taupin came to a temporary standstill, and he worked with other lyricists. A Single Man provided a fortuitous musical hook-up with Gary Osborne, and his 1977 sessions with Philly Soul producer Thom Bell gave him with a Number One UK hit in 2003 with Are You Ready For Love, when it was re-released due to demand from influential British DJs. This is an ongoing pattern. Elton has always been given credit from unlikely quarters. The filmmaker Cameron Crowe immortalised Tiny Dancer in Almost Famous, and then featured My Father's Gun (from the 1970 album Tumbleweed Connection) in the movie Elizabethtown. Producer Eminem sampled Elton and Bernie's 1970 composition, Indian Sunset on Tupac's single, Ghetto Gospel, and who would forget Ewan McGregor and Nicole Kidman's duet of Your Song in Baz Lehrman's Moulin Rouge. In 1980 Elton and Bernie were reunited for the album 21 At 33. The album swiftly reacquainted Elton with the Top Ten and was followed by Jump Up! with the smash single Blue Eyes and Lennon tribute Empty Garden (Hey Hey Johnny), This return to peak form continued with Too Low For Zero, the home of two of Elton's live favourites to this day, I Guess That's Why They Call It The Blues and I'm Still Standing, his valedictory song to the troubles he had gone through. http://www.eltonjohn.com/about/bio.jsp#ataglance
